Why "Lubay"? The Meaning of a Unique Name
When I launched Lubay, I wanted to find a name that fully embodies the soul of my brand: an authentic, elegant, short, and easy-to-remember word, without inventing it from scratch.
After many hours of reflection, I sought help from my biological family, whom I reconnected with in the Kalinga province, Philippines. (Adopted in Belgium, I reconnected with them in 2017, after more than a decade of searching - but that's another story). My Kalinga aunt and uncle generously participated in this quest by suggesting several words rich in meaning and history.
Lubay: A Precious Heritage
Among all the suggestions, "Lubay" immediately resonated with me. In Kalinga culture, "Lubay" refers to rare and precious earrings, passed down from generation to generation. Few women own them, and their value is as much sentimental as symbolic. My aunt herself had received the Lubay from her grandmother before losing them, a memory she still evokes with emotion.
This idea of transmission, rarity, and connection between generations deeply touched me. It echoes the values that drive Lubay today: respect, authenticity, natural elegance. The name of my brand was thus found.
A Meeting of Two Worlds: Lubay, Made in Belgium
While Lubay is rooted in Kalinga culture, it is also deeply embedded in my Belgian identity. That's why you often see the association "Lubay – Made in Belgium": a natural alliance between Filipino heritage and Belgian craftsmanship, between emotion and a demand for quality.
Each Lubay bag is designed and made in Belgium, with the same attention to detail, serving a discreet but assertive elegance.
Lubay, More Than Just a Name
At Lubay, we believe that every detail matters, whether it's a word, a material, a stitch, or a gesture.
Choosing "Lubay" was about embedding in our DNA this desire to combine personal history, committed design, and timeless elegance, far from fleeting trends.
